After completing the BTech degree in Public Relations Management (cum laude) from the Cape Technikon (now Cape Peninsula University of Technology), Minette gained valuable experience working in three diverse industries - corporate communication, lecturing (Cape Peninsula University of Technology) and public relations.
In 2003 she founded her own public relations consultancy, Minette de Smidt PR, offering public relations, media liaison and marketing services to various clients representing the beauty, health & wellness, FMCG, academic, arts & crafts and computer service industries. Some of her most recent clients include, amongst others, Clicks (private label and exclusive health, home and beauty brands, as well as international brands such as Schwarzkopf, Yes To Carrots, Toni & Guy, Max Factor, John Frieda, BaByliss, Joshua Galvin and Kambrook), Partners Hair Design and Bridge Brand Communications. She has also been a moderator for the final cooperative education portfolios of Cape University of Technology Public Relations students for the past seven years.
