Elgin Heights

Situated in the lush garden vale of Elgin Valley, the natural home for lovers of fresh food, cool-climate wines and beautiful country living, the farm Elgin Heights was purchased by the Joubert family in 1966, and farmed as a deciduous fruit unit until 1999. Today the farm is called Smarag, which is the Afrikaans word for emerald, aptly referring to the beautiful green surroundings of the Elgin Valley that form a tapestry of orchards, vineyards and olive groves.

The Joubert family have been wine farmers in Stellenbosch since 1913 on the farm Rozendal, therefore it was a natural transition to extend the grape and wine activities to Elgin Heights. Current owner Ryk Joubert registered the wine production unit under the farms original name, and the vineyard development was initiated by his son D.D., fifth generation wine farmer in the Joubert clan.

The cool climate of the Elgin Valley, the natural slopes of the farm, coupled with the maritime influence, make it the ideal location for the production of top quality wine grapes, evident in the elegant, full-bodied Sauvignon Blanc wines. Crisp and fresh, these boutique-style wines reflect the farms commitment to quality and offer the palate a melody of flavours that will linger long after the last drop.
